photos and an iMac
I have a bad habit of taking hundreds of pictures and then not doing anything with them (other than uploading a random one here or on Facebook). Eventually, they get organized, archived, and burned on cd's...never to be seen again.

I would like to display some more of our family memories around our house, but in an affordable way. I was thinking of making a 'photo clothesline' in the house, something similar to the one I found here. I thought it would be a cute, easy way to display the featured 4x6 prints of the season. And, it would be so easy to switch up when I want to add new ones.

I also finally whipped myself into shape and made Kaitlyn a baby book. To do this I had to sift through photos on over 15 different cd's, and finally found some pictures. Sheesh, I need a new archiving system. But, anyhow, Snapfish.com was having a $9.99 photobook sale, so now I just have to wait for another sale (c'mon shutterfly!) and I'll make a photobook for the year 2009.

And, in other, very exciting news. My brand spankin' new iMac (courtesy of big, fat tax refund, and the apple education discount) will be arriving at my doorstep at the end of the week. I'm a tad excited.

This helps me a TON in the whole photo-organizing thing, so I thought I'd share it with you. When I upload my photos from my camera they are saved in files by date taken. At the end of every month I set aside about 30 minutes to go through my files, delete any pictures that need it, and then rename my files with the date as well as a bit of information to help identify the pictures. Then I make a master file that I save by month (i.e. March 2010). Lastly, I go through my files once more to copy any of my favorite images to a file I call "highlights". This file stays on my main hardrive while the rest of the photos I move to my external drives. These highlight folders are so awesome for quickly being able to find my favorite shots from each month, or to remind me of what we did as a family that month.

This little time every month has been so helpful to me in my long-term storage of those millions of shots I take every year!
