Barnston Island
I love the website findfamilyfun.com, written by a Vancouver family, it lists hundreds of family-friendly activities to do around the lower mainland. On Sunday afternoon, there was one activity that stood out to me on the site- Barnston Island. According to the directions, it was only a 7 minute drive from our house. Which, I found hard to believe, because I had never heard of it before. But, it was true! We just breezed up the main road by our house, and in no time, we were there.

A quaint, little island- home to only a few farms, you have to take a little ferry over the Fraser to get there. It was a wonderful time! The girls loved every second of the 5 minute ferry ride, and Nich and I loved the walk around the island. It was beautiful, peaceful, and rejuvenating. What a great day! Here are some pictures.

*And, for those of you wondering, the diet is still going ok. Yesterday's meal plan was a lot more painful than the first two days- I was very hungry! And, when Nich called and informed me that he wasn't going to be home for dinner- I was tired and exhausted, and couldn't imagine slaving in the kitchen just to make a healthy meal for one- so I got sushi instead- dynamite rolls to be exact, not too healthy, but not too bad either. (And, if you're wondering what Nich had, he ordered pizza. So comparitively, I did not fail at all).

Diet Day 3
By far, my favourite part of this diet is the fact that I've decided to invite Eva into the kitchen with me to prepare a lot of the meals and snacks. I'm not sure what inspired me to do this, because usually she doesn't enjoy being in the kitchen unless cookies are involved, but I just wanted to spike some food interest in her. And, now seemed like the perfect opportunity with all the fun, new recipes and overabundance of fruit.

It's great having her be my little kitchen helper, and she is loving all the attention. And, she's actually (miracle alert!) trying new foods now.

The other favourite part of this diet, is the meals are SO filling, I never really go hungry. Which has thoroughly surprised me. Because I thought dieting and starvation went hand in hand. Now, I'm not sure if this is because of well-thought out, filling, but low-calorie foods or if in fact this diet is not made for small people like me, with small appetites. I would love to know the answer to that one.

My other thoughts about this diet are:
-I've never eaten so much fruit in my life. My stomach constantly feels weird.
-The dinner recipes are actually surprisingly similar to what my family is already eating. So, I guess that means I'm doing something right.
-I'm loving the breakfast and lunch recipes, because usually we eat cereal 6 days a week, and waffles on Sundays. And, boring, old lunch ideas. I am just loving the variety! This diet is turning out to be a big treat. Which, once again, probably isn't a good thing? I must be doing something wrong. This is way too enjoyable.

And, in super, exciting news for all of you that are tired of seeing recipes taking up my whole blog page, I found the meal plan here.

Pictures of cute kidlets coming soon, I promise. I have finally moved all my pictures from my slowly, dying laptop to my new, better-be-amazing-forever iMac. So, yes, pictures of my cute kidets slathered all over this blog will resume shortly.

Diet Day 2
Well, the first day of our first ever diet is complete. And, we did pretty good. And, I'm feeling pretty darn good, too. I followed the menu plan exactly, without cheating or snacking...until about 7:30pm when someone brought over the most amazing crab dip in the history of all crab dips- which I enjoyed way too much of. But, other than that little oopsie, it was a perfect diet day.

Now, onto Day 2!

Tuesday:

Breakfast
1 slice sprouted-grain bread, toasted

Yogurt Parfait:
1 cup nonfat vanilla yogurt
1/2 cup sliced strawberries
1/2 cup sliced mango
2 Tbsp sliced almonds
Grated lime zest, to taste

1. In a glass bowl or tall glass, alternate layers of yogurt and fruit. Top with almonds and a sprinkle of lime zest.

Lunch
Tuna Salad Wrap:
3 oz canned water-packed tuna, drained
1 tsp light mayonnaise
1 tsp Dijon mustard
1/2 cup chopped celery
1 whole-grain wrap
1 handful mixed greens

1. In a small bowl, combine the tuna, mayo, mustard and celery. Place tuna mixture on wrap and top with greens.

1 medium apple

Afternoon snack
1 cup cantaloupe chunks

Dinner
No more boring chicken!

Chicken with Cilantro & Lime:
1 Tbsp olive or canola oil
1 Tbsp honey
Juice of 1 lime
1/4 cup chopped cilantro
4 oz chicken breast

1. In a small bowl, whisk together the oil, honey, lime juice and cilantro. Pour this mixture over the chicken breast and marinate in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.
2. Discard marinade. Grill or broil the chicken for 6 to 8 minutes per side until it’s cooked through.

1 cup steamed spinach

Total daily nutrition: 1,144 cal, 74 g pro, 150 g car, 23 g fiber, 28 g fat (4 g sat fat), 1,145 mg sod

I am especially excited about the dinner- cilantro and lime? My favourites!! Why didn't I ever think of combining those with a chicky? My mouth is already watering.

Also, I would like to add that I'm pretty sure I achieved some sort of 'hero of dieting' status this morning. Kaitlyn woke up at 5:20am, so I promptly got up (okay, there was a little grumbling involved), went to the kitchen, and started preparing our packed lunches and healthy breakfast. That's right, folks. By the time 6:45 rolled around, lunches were packed, lattes' were made (skinny of course!), and we were chowing down on scrambled eggs and toast.

Here goes hoping Diet Day 2 is just as successful- although I am really hoping for a later wake-up call tomorrow...5:20 is just not cool.

Health and Fitness Week
I was flipping through a magazine on Saturday, while waiting for my freshly-cleaned carpets to dry (yay EcoFresh! totally recommend them if you're looking for a carpet cleaner in this area) and my little girl to wake up from her nap, when I came across a new "eating plan" in the health section. It caught my attention because the daily meal plans included foods I love, and the recipes looked easy. I've never been on a diet before, because I'm not really looking to lose weight- but I am looking to be healthier. And, that's what this eating plan promised. Better health and more energy. Yes please!

So, I've declared this week "Health and Fitness week" at the Braam household. We're going to exercise every day, and follow the strict meal and snack plan for the next seven days. I'll post the daily menu throughout the week (hopefully I'm allowed to do this? i'm not sure about copyright laws...) So, if anyone else is interested, they can take part, too! Maybe not this week, but if you get inspired in the future, it will all be here.

So, without further adieu, here is the first week of Denise Austin's 3-week eating plan, from her book "Daily Dozen"...

Monday

Breakfast
2 eggs scrambled with 1/4 cup chopped bell pepper
1 slice whole-wheat bread, toasted
1 med orange

Lunch
Feta & Cranberry Salad
3 cups spinach
1/2 c. chopped cucumber
2 oz roasted turkey breast
2 Tbsp crumbled low fat Feta
2 Tbsp dried cranberries
2 tsp extra-virgin olive oil
2 tsp balsamic vinegar

1 banana

Afternoon snack
Unsalted almonds
Apple

Dinner
Maple-Glazed Salmon
2 tsp maple syrup
1 Tbsp soy sauce
3 oz Salmon
Preheat the grill. Combine syrup and soy sauce in small bowl. Place salmon skin-side down on grill, brush sauce on top. Grill for 10 minutes per inch on thickness.
3/4 cup cooked brown rice
3/4 cup steamed mixed veggies

I am really excited. We ventured out to the Granville Island Market this morning, and picked up all the produce. And, I've already prepped Nich and I's Feta and Cranberry Salad for tomorrow.

I'm sure I'll be starving by Tuesday...but hey, it's just one week. I can do anything for one week, right?

Easter and a birthday girl
I snuck a couple more shots of Eva playing in the backyard...

Photobucket

I'm not sure why she's hugging a tree....? But, it made a cute picture.

And, here is the little girl that is turning two years old tomorrow. She is hunting for Easter eggs with her Daddy.

I can't believe she is going to be two. I just can't believe it.

photos and an iMac
I have a bad habit of taking hundreds of pictures and then not doing anything with them (other than uploading a random one here or on Facebook). Eventually, they get organized, archived, and burned on cd's...never to be seen again.

I would like to display some more of our family memories around our house, but in an affordable way. I was thinking of making a 'photo clothesline' in the house, something similar to the one I found here. I thought it would be a cute, easy way to display the featured 4x6 prints of the season. And, it would be so easy to switch up when I want to add new ones.

I also finally whipped myself into shape and made Kaitlyn a baby book. To do this I had to sift through photos on over 15 different cd's, and finally found some pictures. Sheesh, I need a new archiving system. But, anyhow, Snapfish.com was having a $9.99 photobook sale, so now I just have to wait for another sale (c'mon shutterfly!) and I'll make a photobook for the year 2009.

And, in other, very exciting news. My brand spankin' new iMac (courtesy of big, fat tax refund, and the apple education discount) will be arriving at my doorstep at the end of the week. I'm a tad excited.

I'm in lurve
With my beautiful kids, and these shots that sprung from my renewed inspiration to pick up my camera and capture the precious, fleeting moments...

Photobucket

Eva isn't a fan of the camera these days, but I snuck this shot while she wasn't paying any attention.

Photobucket

This next one, makes my heart skip a beat. Handsome man wearing flannel, cuddling my beautiful, bunny-loving baby.

Photobucket

Yes, I am inspired.
